Where to find the most reliable oral health care information

More and more patients are coming to Huszti Dental Care with questions about oral health information they have seen online, usually through social media. But many of these people come to us because they started doing something they saw on Instagram or Facebook and it ends up causing a problem.

Most recently a young woman looking for whiter teeth was biting into a half a lemon then brushing with sea salt. Twice a day, every day. Her teeth weren't getting noticibly whiter, but they were getting more sensitive. That's because the lemon juice she was sinking her teeth into was eating away at her enamel!

We've also heard from other patients that changes to oral health recommendations from the U.S. Health and Human Services have left them confused. So where do you go to find good, science based information? There are two simple answers to this question and the first one is obvious: Ask us.

Many patients trust us for emergencies or when they are in pain, but sometimes have a blind spot when it comes to telling them something simple, like, say, don't do everything you see on the internet. These "health influencers" can be very dangerous, because they are generally not pushing good practices, they are generally promoting quick "fixes" that don't work. They don't care about your teeth, they are interested in having a big following and lots of "likes." Many of them are being paid by the social media companies for this misleading content. It seemes to work, as you will sometimes see several different social media personalities pushing the same idea—often with the exact same wording. That's because if a creator sees another creator has a lot of traffic on a particular post, they will copy it in an attempt to collect more likes for themselves. All these different people pushing the same information has the cumulative effect of making it seem sound, or like something everyone is doing. But it's simply not true. Think about that old adage: If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you, too?

But what's more dangerous is when health information is politicized, because that's dangerous and can lead to widespread problems. The confusion over use of fluoride is one example of this, and we have written about this before. Taking health information from people who do not have medical training, but have "done some research" is a sure way to get into trouble.

If you want to do your own research, it's possible, but you must understand that—like social media influencers—not all sources are equal. The American Dental Association 's page is the best source for dental health information. Its content—though mostly targeting dentists—is thoroughly vetted by dental professionals and represents the most complete information, backed by scientific theory and research, available.

And again, our dental professionals, all of whom have spent decades in this field, are more than happy to answer any question you may have about dental care. The only dumb question is the one left unasked.

Is an electric toothbrush right for you?

On one recent day, three separate patients came to Huszti Dental Care for their regular checkups with questions about electric toothbrushes. That gave us the idea for this post, because it seems there are a lot of misconceptions.

In general, the consistent sonic or oscillating motion of electric toothbrushes remove more plaque than brushing with a traditional toothbrush. That’s a good thing. But there are other major benefits that might make you consider investing in an electric toothbrush.

To begin with, they are gentler on the gums than traditional toothbrushes. How? Many of them have built in sensors that let you know when you are brushing too hard, a practice that can lead to gum recession and a reduction to enamel.

Another plus: Nearly all of them have built-in timers to encourage you to brush for the full two minutes recommended by the American Dental Association.

People with arthritis or other conditions that limit their dexterity find them very helpful because the brush does the work they can’t. And many come with different settings for deep cleaning, sensitive teeth or gum care.

But there are other considerations.

To begin with, most electric toothbrushes cost much more than a toothbrush you might pick up in a drug store or receive free from your friendly dentist. They range from around $40 and can cost more than $100. You will also need to purchase replaceable brush heads, which need to be changed a couple times a year, at a cost of less than $10 when purchased in bulk.

Then there is the issue of space. These are not convenient for people with small bathrooms or bathrooms without much counterspace, since they need to be charged and, depending on the model, that charger can be bulky.

They can also be inconvenient when you travel, because you may have to pack the charger as well.

Lastly, there are some people who don’t like the feeling of using an electric toothbrush.

Our advice is to try it, if you think you will benefit. Of course, you may be doing a good job on your own, and you might want to save that money. Ask us next time you’re in, and we can let you know what we think is the best option for you.

Start the year off right by putting your mouth first!

Did you make resolutions for the new year? If so, you will want to make room for one more of great importance: Pay more attention to your oral health.

Now some of you may think you’re doing a good job, and you just may be, but here are a few things to think about to get your new year off to a good start.

Replace your toothbrush: Most people seem to think the one they get at their visit to Huszti Dental Care is good until the next time they visit us—six months later. Not a good idea. Worn toothbrushes are less effective at removing plaque and bacteria, which increases risks of decay and gum disease. Experts say you should change your toothbrush—or the head of your electric toothbrush—every three to four months. Children may need to do it more often because they can be really strong brushers. Also, always replace your toothbrush after you are sick, as the brushes can reintroduce germs.

Time your brushing: All the experts say you should strive for two times a day for two minutes each time. Next time you brush, use a timer and brush for the full two minutes. You may think you’re probably close, but chances are you are not. Consciously brushing for two minutes each time lets you remember the back teeth or the other corners of your mouth you may forget about regularly.

Keep dental floss at hand: We all should be flossing more, but you often don’t because it always seems to be one more chore keeping you from your snuggly warm bed. Keep a package of dental floss in your car, or your desk at work, even the kitchen, so it’s always nearby when you need it.

Think about your teeth when you eat: Food can stain your teeth and it can strain your teeth, so cut down on coffee and dark sodas, red wines and other stainers. (You could also simply commit to using a straw when drinking these items. But also remember that teeth need a calcium-rich diet including dairy, broccoli, almonds and fruits and veggies to remain strong.

Just choose one or two of these to start doing now if all of them together seem overwhelming. Incorporate the others later, you’ll be glad you did. And next year, you will have something more fun to make a resolution about.

Think before you drink: Alcohol can affect dental health

It's the holiday season. So for many that means parties, lots of food and maybe a celebratory drink or two.

There are so many studies about alcohol that make the news that it can be hard to keep up. A study that says a glass of red wine a day may be good for your heart health is followed closely by another study that says daily consumption of alcohol is dangerous. But what researchers don't take into account in many of these studies is the effect alcohol has on oral health.

Not to be a downer, but alcohol abuse can lead to higher plaque levels, and increased risk of tooth loss or decay, mouth sores and periodontal disease. There is also an increased risk of oral cancer.

The reason behind most of these risks is simple: sugar. Alcohol may not taste sweet, but there are sugars in it and bacteria in your mouth feed on those sugars and grow. Slowly nursing a drink over a long period of time keeps sugar levels elevated and that helps bacteria grow.

A second reason is that alcohol dries out the mouth. That means saliva is reduced and since saliva rinses away bad bacteria in the mouth, the risk of problems like tooth decay and gum disease are increased. More immediate is that without saliva to wash away that bacteria, you can develop bad breath, which is no fun for you or those around you.

Now most people won't have to worry about this, but it is possible that alcohol can stain your teeth, especially if you are a fan of red wine. After a glass of two you can often see a slight discoloration that goes away with brushing. But it's just a good thing to know, especially if you have been told you have weak enamel.

Solutions? They are so easy it's almost not worth writing about. Cut down on sugar by drinking dry wines and limiting fruity alcoholic drinks. Also, drinking water after each alcoholic beverage will rinse some of the sugars down. (It's also a good idea to keep yourself sober.) Snacking is also a good idea to get the saliva flowing—just stay away from the sweets! You can also chew some sugar-free gum in between drinks. And, of course, maintaining your oral hygiene regimen of brushing and flossing is a must.

So if you plan on making alcohol a part of your holiday celebrations remember: Your teeth aren't immune to the effects of alcohol. Be responsible, so you won't regret it later.

Don't let Halloween be scary to your teeth

Halloween is just around the corner. And we don't want to be a wet blanket by telling you things you already know, but...too much candy can be detrimental to your dental health. And we don't expect anyone to not let their little goblins out for a fun night of screaming and collecting treats. But here are a few things you can do to minimize any impact the sugary treats might have on your children.

Eat Halloween treats with meals If you unwrap a sugary treat right after meals, your mouth is already making the extra saliva it needs to help rinse away bits of food (and candy). That's the point of saliva, it removes bacteria.

Sugary things should not be regular snacks Eat them, sure, once in a while, but mix it up a bit. Fruit, raw veggies, nuts or crackers should be the primary snacks. This goes for kids — and adults.

Sticky candy is the enemy Avoid sticky, gummy sweets that can cling to your teeth, which raises your risk of developing cavities. Also, hard candy that stays in your mouth for a long time isn't great either. Also, sour candies have lots of dietary acids that can attack the enamel of your teeth.

Chocolate is good! (In moderation) Chocolate is the most popular kind of candy and it won't stick to your teeth like other candies do. Dark chocolate is even better, because there’s less sugar in semisweet and dark chocolate than in milk chocolate.

Don't be the keeper of a candy bowl It may be tempting to keep candy around and your coworkers may love it, too. But your teeth will be happy if you put the candy away so you won't mindlessly eat it all day long. Also, limit your kids' candy consumption to one or two pieces a day.

Chew sugar-free gum If you do eat candy, consider chewing sugar-free gum afterward. It will minimize the damage done by the acid. Have it on hand and chew for 20 minutes for the best results. It will also keep your breath fresh.

Be that family that gives healthy treats Too much of a good thing is not a good thing. Consider passing out coloring books and crayons or pens and pencils or even toothbrushes or floss. It won't go to waste and you can feel good knowing you helped another parent out.

How do I know if I have a cavity?

A new patient recently called the offices of Huszti Dental Care.

She told us she thought she might have a cavity and wondered what to do about it.

While we don't generally encourage people to self-diagnose dental problems, or look up solutions on search engines, we did applaud her reaching out to see what was causing her pain. We set her up with an appointment and when we saw her a few days after she called she did, indeed, have a good-sized cavity that needed to be addressed. She had put off going to a dentist because she hadn't had one since she was a child and she was afraid of a dental drill.

(As an aside here, Huszti Dental Care uses the newest technologies and practices that make cavity repair painless for most patients. But that's not what this post is about.)

Here are the symptoms she noticed and a few others she did not experience, that may mean a cavity needs filling.

Tooth sensitivity — Discomfort or pain when drinking hot or cold liquids might indicate a cavity. Sometimes people also feel pain when eating sweet foods.

Toothache — A throbbing pain that won't go away, especially if it's always the same tooth.

Discolored areas — Dark spots, or sometimes white spots on your teeth, often where two teeth meet. These would have to be pretty advanced cavities to show up like this.

Pits in your teeth — Feeling a rough area of your tooth, usually with your tongue, that is new may also be a sign.

Bad breath — Bacteria growth caused by cavities can cause this. Ask someone you trust to let you know.

Of course the best way to ensure you stay cavity free is to find a dentist you like and make regular visits; the standard is every six months. We know what leads to a cavity and what to do when their is one. We often see issues long before they become cavities and can offer advice — like flossing or more complete brushing or paying special attention to a particular part of the mouth — to stop it in its tracks.

The patient mentioned earlier in this post was treated with no pain and was on her way in less than an hour. Happy enough with her treatment that she made another appointment before she left, because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Debunking a few dental myths

Sorry to say, but summer is almost officially over. Long, lazy days at the beach or picnicking are coming to an end and school schedules are starting up for many people. In the spirit of new beginnings, here's a brief back-to-school lesson on oral health myths we at Huszti Dental Care hear all the time.

1: Brushing harder gets teeth cleaner: Nope. Brushing aggressively might make it feel like you are doing a good thing, but in general firm and gentle wins the race. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush, unless one of our team suggests the need for a stronger bristle brush. Harsh brushing can be detrimental to enamel and, especially, the gums, which can get worn down and recede. Those two conditions bring their own sets of problems. So be nice to your teeth. Slow and thorough beats rough and fast every time.

2: Baby teeth don't need much care, since they are going to fall out anyway. This is another dangerous myth. Healthy baby teeth mean healthy adult teeth. In fact, the healthier the baby teeth, the healthier the adult teeth are when they start coming in. Also, starting children on a good oral health care routine early means they will be more likely to carry it on as they grow.

3: If your teeth aren't bothering you there's no need to go to the dentist. Yes, some people believe this and it couldn't be farther from the truth. Many dental issues don't cause pain in the early stages, which is when treatment is most effective. So taking care of these things early will prevent pain later. It also prevents more invasive treatments. And pain. And who wants pain?

4: A dentist or hygienist can't tell if you haven't been brushing properly. This is one of the most believed myths. People around the world step up their brushing the day or two before a dental visit. They may even break out that floss they swore they would use daily after that last checkup. This is simply not true. We can see your puffy, tended gums which tells us you haven't been flossing, and the amount of tartar buildup shows you haven't been brushing. You are not fooling anyone but yourself.

5: Chewing gum is a good substitute for brushing. Well, not really. Chewing gum — sugar free gum — can have some health benefits, including addressing bad breath, but it is not a solid substitute for brushing. Sure it gets the saliva flowing, and may even be a sensible substitute for when you have a craving for something sweet, but it does not remove food particles or plaque from teeth.

The best way to remove a loose baby tooth: tips from Huszti Dental Care in Milford, MI

Losing their first tooth is a big deal for children—and often for their parents, too. It marks a step toward becoming a “big kid” whether they are ready for that or not.

Whatever emotions stirred by a lose tooth—excitement, trepidation, impatience—one of them doesn’t have to be fear. Here are some tips from Huszti Dental Care in Milford, Mi., on the right way to deal with a loose tooth.

Right around the age of 6, sometimes earlier sometimes later, children begin losing their baby teeth to make way for their permanent teeth. It starts with just a little wiggle and children can’t help but push against it with their tongue. If left alone, the tooth will come out on its own, sometimes when the child is eating. But it might be best to not let it go that far.

If a tooth wiggles easily and if it’s becoming a nuisance, you might want to think about helping it out, literally. But when?

One absolute sign that it’s time to pull a loose tooth is when it’s, as they say, hanging by a thread.

Start by washing your hands well. Then sit down with the child to make her comfortable and talk through the process. Use a facial tissue or some toilet paper to help you grab the tooth firmly and gently pull straight down. It might be uncomfortable or, at the very least, unfamiliar to the child, but it shouldn’t be painful. If it doesn’t come out easily, don’t force it. Wait a day or two and try again.

While it is not common, there might be reasons to see a dentist instead of removing the tooth yourself. If the child is feeling pain or there are signs of infection such as redness or swelling, you should contact our Milford dental office immediately to ensure no further complications.

If you notice a permanent tooth breaking through while the baby tooth is still firmly in place, you should make an appointment for us to take a look at it. Similarly, if your child has had previous dental issues, or you just have a feeling that something isn’t right, it doesn’t hurt to bring us in.

Huszti Dental in Milford, MI celebrates UDM Dental students taking to the streets for healthy teeth

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry’s Titans for Teeth Mobile Clinic recently visited Hoover Elementary School in Highland Park, bringing smiles and essential dental care to students right where they learn. Among the volunteers was Sophia Huszti— a Milford High School alumna and future dentist at Huszti Dental Care in Milford, MI—who is training to become one of the next generation of dental leaders.

Staffed by dental students and faculty, the mobile clinic provides preventive and restorative services, oral health education and more to underserved communities across metro Detroit. It's all part of Detroit Mercy Dental's mission to expand access to care and instill healthy habits in young patients—one school visit at a time.

The Titans for Teeth School Based Mobile Dental Clinic is a 38-foot mobile dental coach. It has eight chairs, four inside the van and four portable units that are set-up on-location. Throughout the academic year, the clinic travels to local participating schools in Detroit and Wayne County to provide comprehensive care for K-12 children. Treatment is performed by dental students under supervision of a licensed dentist and/or dental hygienist faculty.

The Titans for Teeth School Based Mobile Dental Clinic was funded in large part by a grant from the Delta Dental Foundation.

Detroit Mercy Dental has been taking oral healthcare on the road since the 1970s, providing dental care to populations that often don't have access to it.

Today, the School's mobile programs provide services to children, adolescents, adult and geriatric populations in underserved areas in southeast Michigan. Thousands of patients receive necessary treatments and procedures through these free outreach clinics. In addition to helping the community, it also provides community health experiences to the dental students to build competence and confidence in interacting with a diverse patient base. These personal interactions lead to better trust and more effective communication about oral health. Finally, the clinics keep many patients out of emergency rooms because issues are addressed early on, before they become major problems.

It's a great program where everybody benefits!

How to live with sensitive teeth

A new patient came in to Huszti Dental Care recently for a cleaning appointment. He had not been to the dentist for many years — and only came because his wife insisted — because his teeth are very sensitive and he didn't think he could handle the exam.

"They hurt when I drink something cold and they hurt when I drink something hot. Sometimes even chewing and even brushing my teeth set it off," he said.

This is not uncommon. While sometimes a hidden cavity, an old filling, a chipped or cracked tooth can cause pain. It could also be a recessed gum that exposes the root. When you tell us your teeth are sensitive, these are the first things we look for, because they are easily fixed. But there are other causes of sensitive teeth and there are ways to make you feel more comfortable.

First the causes: If you don't have any of the issues listed above, you may be brushing your teeth too hard. Or you may be using products to whiten or bleach teeth. These actions can expose your dentin — the layer of your teeth just beneath the enamel. Dentin is not as hard as enamel, so it is naturally more sensitive. Grinding your teeth at night can also cause sensitive teeth. One thing we can't do much about, though, is that teeth sometimes get naturally more sensitive as you age.

But don't worry, there are many ways to combat tooth sensitivity.

Desensitizing toothpastes or mouthwashes can help a great deal. If you're brushing at least twice a day — and you should be — use one of the American Dental Association-approved desensitizing toothpastes. You'll know it by the ADA logo on the box. Not all are alike, so if your first choice isn't doing the trick, try a different one. And always use a soft-bristled toothbrush and don't push too hard: It's the brush, not your muscle, that does the cleaning.

Use fluoride rinses and toothpaste with fluoride in them. You can also receive professional fluoride treatments from Huszti Dental Care.

If you are using tooth-whitening products — especially any home remedy you saw on social media — you may want to lay off for a while to see whether that is the cause. Many of these products are highly acidic and can damage the enamel. (This was, in fact, the case with the patient who prompted this post and he said he would stop using them to see if it makes any difference.)

Are you grinding your teeth at night? You probably don't know since you're asleep. But we can determine whether you are by the wear pattern on your teeth. We might suggest wearing a mouthguard at night to protect the enamel.

Other things to consider are cutting down on acidic drinks like pop and wine. You can also use a straw, which effectively bypasses the teeth.

Keeping your young athletes' teeth safe

Spring is here and with that comes sports season for the kids.

Team sports like baseball, soccer, softball, lacrosse and track and field all offer great exercise for kids, not to mention lessons in teamwork and self-esteem. But injuries are also part of the game, so to speak.

Huszti Dental Care, as a family focused dentist in Milford, see's lots of sports injuries — in both children and adults — and while they may feel like the end of the world, they really aren’t. Especially if parents take some simple steps to protect their children’s precious smiles.

The most important way to protect your teeth is to have your child use a mouthguard during both practice and games. These are readily available at sporting goods stores, even drug stores, but you should have a chat with us to see whether you’re getting the right one for your child and their sport.

We suggest you don’t purchase the inexpensive, one-size-fits all mouthguards, as one size does not fit all. Because of this they can be uncomfortable, which means your child won’t want to wear it, and it can’t protect their teeth in their sports bag.

The boil-and-bite mouth guards are still inexpensive but provide much better protection because they can be formed right to your child’s bite, which keeps it in place, doing what it is meant to do.

If your child is in a particularly aggressive sport, a custom-fit mouth guard may be the best option. It costs a little more but they are worth the cost especially for older athletes who have all their adult teeth and have maybe even had some costly orthodonture.

You may not consider helmets a way to protect you child’s teeth, but they can protect the jaw or mouth from any blows, especially in contact sports. Not to mention protecting the child’s head, as well!

Let's talk about fluoride

Fluoride is a naturally occurring chemical that has been added to public water supplies for nearly a century. In 1944, Michigan's own Grand Rapids was the first city in the world to take this step. Today, 70% of the world's population living in more than 133 countries benefit from the practice of adding low-levels of fluoride to the water their residents drink.

Decades of research has shown that fluoride reduces cavities, increases oral health and has no realistic downsides. In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control put the addition of fluoride to water systems — along with vaccines, recognition of smoking's health hazards, motor vehicle and workplace safety regulations — in the top 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th Century. It's safe, inexpensive, and effective in preventing tooth decay no matter what the economic status or access to care.

And yet, remarkably, probably part of the trend of distrust in public institutions that has roiled the United States for many years, removing fluoride from the water is on the table.

Here's what you need to know.

In the early 1900s, oral cavities were commonplace among the population. Yet dentists noticed that there were some areas of the country where they were not. Researchers looked into the issue and found that, in some parts of the country, fluoride was naturally present in the water supply. They also noticed that many people who lived in those areas had discolored teeth. It turned out fluoride — more accurately really high levels of fluoride — were responsible for that too. After much study, scientists and doctors determined that a very low level of fluoride in water would prevent cavities and all the issues that come with them. In the United States, the recommended ratio is 0.7 milligrams fluoride per liter. Individual states can set their own levels, up to the maximum level of 4.0 milligrams per liter.

Some people have suggested there are side effects from hip fractures to bone cancer to delays in brain development in fetuses and young children. All studies have proven there is no relationship to these concerns and fluoride at low levels.

In some countries where fluoride naturally occurs at very high levels people can develop a condition whereby their bones become very brittle. There are no areas in the United States where that is a concern, according to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

While it may be good to question some institutions and long-held beliefs, questioning the efficacy of fluoride in public water supplies should not be one of them. It would be irresponsible to remove it.

5 things you should know about cavities

Cavities: Chances are everyone you know has one — probably even more than one. But for something that is so widespread, people don't know a lot about them. As a family centered Milford dental office we have many years of experience to share.

Here are five interesting things (really!) about cavities and two tips for keeping them at bay.

1: A cavity, which dentists call "dental caries," is decay in a tooth. They are caused when bacteria in your mouth produce acids that breaks down tooth enamel. Though often painless, they can cause sensitivity, pain and, if left untreated, visible holes in the tooth.

2: People have known about cavities, and the treatment of them, for a long time. Fillings — what dentists put in the cavity to stop it from getting worse — have been found in cadavers that date back 10,000 years. Those fillings have ranged from beeswax to gold to silver and tin. Today's cavities are mostly filled with a resin that can be matched to the color of your teeth. No more unsightly metal!

3: It isn't the sugar causing the cavities, it's the acid your mouth produced by bacteria that has to break down the sugars. It's best to limit sugar intake and acidic foods and drinks like pop. And don't think you're OK switching to diet pop — the acid in those drinks contributes to cavities.

4: Because saliva plays an important part in preventing cavities, dry mouth puts you at risk for cavity growth. That's another reason to stay hydrated — but drink water, not pop. And let the hygienist or dentist if you are taking any medications or have any conditions that make your mouth dry.

5: Leaving cavities untreated can lead to other health problems. Early detection is key — that's why dentists take x-rays of your mouth — to catch and treat a cavity before it becomes a more painful issue, like an abscess, a broader infection or even tooth loss. Bad oral hygiene has also been linked to heart disease, so visit Huszti Dental Care twice a year.

The holidays are here and with them come parties, late nights, foods and sweets that can put your oral hygiene routine on a back burner. Here are some tips on how to keep that from happening. It's easier than you think.

Stay consistent with your routine — D on’t forget the basics: brush twice a day and floss. Bring travel-sized toothpaste and a toothbrush with you to events to help you keep your routine on track.

Be mindful of sugary treats — Cookies, pies and candy canes are everywhere from office kitchenettes to parties, but they can lead to tooth decay if you’re not careful. Eat them in moderation and pair them with water to rinse away the sugars and acids that build up and cause decay. And sure, those cookies only come around once a year, but also eat other things — fruits, nuts, crunchy vegetables.

Drink plenty of water — Holiday beverages like hot cocoa, wine and sweet alcoholic drinks can take a toll on your teeth. Drinking water not only keeps you hydrated but also washes away lingering food particles and reduces acidity in your mouth which can lead to decay.

Don’t skip dental appointments — With all the hubbub of the holidays, it’s easy to forget routine dental checkups. Many of our patients who have come to us for years are now away at college and have to fit in a dental visit while home between semesters. Don't skip those appointments! United against breast cancer

Healthcare workers are united in one cause: Keeping you healthy. Whether they are general practitioners, specialists, nurses or dentists, they all work together to ensure their patients are healthy and will remain that way.

Huszti Dental Care's staff celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October by donning bright pink scrubs. They reminded female patients to get mammograms and urged male patients to nudge their wives and significant others to do the same. Students at University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry — where the Drs. Huszti's daughters are working to follow in their parents' footsteps — also brought attention to the cause with their own pink scrubs.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide and awareness is crucial for early detection, prevention and treatment. It is estimated that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, highlighting the importance of education and outreach efforts. Breast cancer awareness campaigns, such as those held every October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, play a vital role in informing the public about the disease, its risk factors, and ways to detect it early.

It's that early detection that is the key to improving survival rates, as treatments for breast cancer have a higher chance of working when started in its earliest stages. Regular screenings, such as mammograms, are vital for women, especially those over 40, as they can identify cancer before symptoms develop. Self-exams can also help women understand the normal look and feel of their breasts, making it easier to spot changes, but they should not be considered a substitute for professional screenings,

Awareness campaigns also focus on promoting healthy lifestyles and understanding risk factors, such as family history, genetic mutations and lifestyle choices like diet and exercise. Research into breast cancer is ongoing, with new treatments, therapies and ways to minimize recurrence constantly being developed.

Support for breast cancer patients and their families is another key aspect of awareness. Many organizations provide resources, counseling and financial assistance to help those affected by the disease navigate the emotional and financial challenges it can bring.

Overall, breast cancer awareness saves lives, and that's why our office participates in this important effort every year. Who says dental school is all hard work?

Not Olivia and Sophia Huszti, who are working their way through University of Detroit Mercy’s School of Dentistry. (The same place their parents met many years ago.)

While dental school is truly a great deal of work in the classroom, there is also a lot of work outside the classroom.

Upperclassmen take it upon themselves to meet members of the first-year class to offer friendship, support and some tips for handling the studying and the stress of dental school. In addition, many students participate in local chapters of national organized dental associations.

Still, the sisters know there has to be a little time for fun. The photographs here are from a recent event the sisters threw to meet the new students and blow off a little steam watching the Detroit Lions.

The event was a membership meeting of the Detroit Mercy chapter of the American Student Dental Association, “a national, student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests and welfare of dental students.” That’s according to the webpage on Detroit Mercy Dental’s website.

The ASDA’s goal is to introduce students to organized dentistry in the hopes that they will be involved during their career. It provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy.

The chapter has monthly meetings where members learn about issues that affect dentistry and organizes workers to staff the free dental clinic they partner on with St. Vincent de Paul as well as other events that serve the community and allow the students to hone their skills with patients.

Cosmetic dentistry isn't just about making you look better

Aside from twice-yearly checkups, the most common reason people make appointments with Huszti Dental Care is to address issues that make them uncomfortable with their smile. We're proud to be known as the go-to cosmetic dentist in Milford.

It could be uneven teeth, maybe discoloration or maybe you chipped a tooth and don’t like the way it looks. It's called cosmetic dentistry and our patients are surprised at the number of options they have to bring their smile to its fullest. And they are even more surprised at the low costs of many of them. And we should say they are relieved to learn nearly everything can be done in our Milford Road office.

Take tooth contouring for instance. This is a procedure where a dentist takes a special tool and reshapes the tooth by removing some of the enamel. Why do this? Well maybe one of your teeth is larger, making for a non-symmetrical smile. Or maybe you have chipped a tooth and you would like to fix that. Some people have teeth that overlap near the bottom and that, too can be addressed through tooth contouring. It’s simple, painless and can be done in one appointment without any follow-up.

Gum contouring is a similar procedure except that the dentist removes gum instead of enamel. This addresses what some people call a “gummy smile” and can fix an uneven gum line or an overgrowth of gums. This procedure is done by a periodontist — we have one right in our office — and will require local anesthesia to numb the area, and you may experience mild soreness, but it’s temporary and quickly goes away.

One of our most popular cosmetic dentistry services is teeth whitening. Many patients come to us after an over-the-counter product to bleach their teeth yields an uneven or disappointing result. (Spoiler alert: They usually do!) Our products are better, quicker and last longer — provided you take care of your teeth.

We also offer clear braces that realign your teeth quicker than traditional braces. Our patients say none of their friends and family notices their aligners, but they all notice the results!

Lastly, porcelain veneers can cover broken, undersized or permanently discolored teeth to make them symmetrical and bright.

So, what exactly are zygomatic dental implants? Think of them as a special type of implant designed to anchor to the cheekbone — or zygoma — rather than the jawbone. This unique approach is useful for people who might not have enough healthy jawbone left to support standard implants. White Coat Ceremony marks big step in dental education

Huszti Dental Care founders Bill Huszti and Anna Chong-Huszti celebrated along with their daughters as their oldest, Olivia, second from left, participated in the White Coat Ceremony at Detroit Mercy Dental.

A landmark event in many healthcare education programs, the White Coat Ceremony, for Olivia, means her journey through dental school is halfway over! The ceremony is meant to remind the students about the importance of their chosen field and calls on them to uphold the high ethics and standards of care required by the field. Together, the students recited an oath that binds them to the highest degree of patient care.

Students will now be able to work with patients at the Detroit Mercy Dental Center, which provides patient-centered care and comprehensive dental services in a state-of-the-art facility.

Most patients at the center are part of the student clinical program where student doctors provide treatment under the supervision of licensed faculty dentists. Services are provided at a reduced rate, making costs more affordable for the patient.

"Today was a big milestone for me as I received my white coat from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry," Olivia said. "I couldn't be more excited to take another step toward joining my parents at Huszti Dental Care and fulfilling my dreams of walking in their footsteps."

Olivia is a strong student who also gives back to the school, volunteering her time at many events, attending conferences and was class president her first year.

Even though Olivia's parents also graduated from University of Detroit Mercy, this was their first White Coat Ceremony. That's because the school did not begin the tradition until after they graduated.

It won't be their last, though: Their second daughter, Sophia, is right behind Olivia at the same school. Her White Coat Ceremony will come next year around this time.

Get to know your tongue

Many people may think they have a healthy mouth. They brush, they floss, they whiten, they use fluoride rinses to keep their teeth strong. But many people forget something else that takes up a lot of space in their mouth: The tongue!

Ensuring you have a clean tongue should be an important part of any oral healthcare regime. An appointment at Huszti Dental Care often includes a discussion about your tongue, because that is often where early signs of health problem.

The tongue is made of eight muscles and is usually about four-inches long. It can have up to 10,000 tastebuds that help you enjoy what you eat and drink. A healthy tongue is bumpy and pink.

If your tongue is white, you might have thrush, a fungal infection of the mouth. It happens mostly to young children and is often the result of certain medications. It's nothing to worry about, but should be addressed. A tongue can look yellow, purple or even black and when this happens, it is best to have a trained medical expert like those at Huszti Dental Care look at it. Usually a discolored tongue is easily remedied by paying special attention to cleaning it, but it could also indicate a vitamin deficiency or an underlying condition or a bad habit like smoking.

Cleaning your tongue reduces the bacteria in your mouth that can lead to bad breath and plaque buildup, but simply using mouthwash won't do the trick. The easiest way to keep your tongue clean is to brush it along with your teeth. Brush both ways and remember to get it underneath. Tongue scrapers are another step you can take. They are readily available in pharmacies.

So next time you're brushing your teeth, take a moment to give your tongue some love. A happy tongue means a happy mouth.

How to take care of your toothbrush

The most important tool in your oral hygiene is a good toothbrush. How you take care of that brush is important to your overall health, so we here at Huszti Dental Care think it's worth a refresher.

One important consideration is how you store a toothbrush. It's important that a toothbrush dry out between uses in order to inhibit bacterial growth. So don't store it flat on the counter where it will likely sit in a puddle of water and don't put it in a drawer where there is no airflow. The best way to store a toothbrush is bristles up in a holder made to store toothbrushes. If not, a cup will work, but try not to have the whole family's brushes stored in one cup, as it can pass on germs.

The next thing to think of is where that cup is stored. Most people keep them on the counter, but you should know that's not the best idea. When you use a sink to wash your hands or face, you usually splash water, which contains soap and even bacteria onto the toothbrush. Don't store it near the toilet, either, because — disgusting as this sounds — flushing a toilet can spray germs around the room. Don't keep your brushes in the line of fire. Wall-mounted holders are a good option, as long as they are positioned away from splashing water, which helps them dry out.

You should also clean your holder regularly with sanitizing wipes to keep it free of germs and dust. And while you're at it, remember to clean the toothbrush -- rinse it well, don't let dried toothpaste collect on it. Remember, this is something you put in your mouth, keep it clean!

Lastly, remember that the American Dental Association recommends replacing toothbrushes every three or four months. Let the bristles tell you when it's time — worn down bristles make a toothbrush less effective.

So treat your toothbrush well and it will treat you well.

Let's start with the big news: The long-anticipated Central Park transformation will be completed this summer. This bridge between the Southside and Downtown will feature a new pavilion that's being installed now. This will be a new hub for events, concerts and all sorts of get togethers. The Milford Farmers' Market is back for its 15th season from 3-7 p.m. May 9. This is a great place to find fresh fare from local farmers, producers and artists. You'll also meet old friends and, hopefully some new ones. It's all on East Liberty Street between Main and Union. Find out more here .

Racing is a family affair

Huszti Dental Care is a family practice serving the great residents of Milford and Highland.

But every now and then, the Huszti family takes time off to rejuvenate and they do this through travel and — though it may not sound relaxing — racing.

And they are pretty good at it too. A recent trip to Hawaii with Drs. Bill Huszti and Anna Chong-Huszti and their future-doctor daughters Olivia and Soph included a 5K race that took them down the beautiful roads and even more beautiful beaches of Maui.

The entire family ran in the race and the podiums included most of the family. Olivia (above second from left) was the top female finisher. Her sister was right behind as the No. 2 female racer. Bill finished an impressive second in the men's category and Anna also finished.

"Running down those beaches and looking at the water starting right at the National Humpback Whale Sanctuary was pretty amazing," Dr. Huszti said. "And the weather was perfect, too."

"Being able to run this with the whole family was very special," added Chong-Huszti.

The Huszti family almost swept the awards at an indoor triathlon at Lakeland High School recently. Swimming, biking (on a stationary bike) and running on a track were all done for a specific amount of time. The distance achieved by the competitors in of each of the three legs of the contest were added together to determine the winners.

Dr. Huszti took home first prize, topping everyone else in the triathlon. Right behind was Olivia in second place overall and Soph was fourth overall. The two sisters were the No. 1 and 2 females in the race.

Dr. Chong-Huszti reminds her patients that regular exercise — even without preparing for a race — is important to your overall health. Now that spring is in the air, what better way to enjoy the beauty of Milford and Highland by adding regular walks to your week!

The truth behind (yet another) social media trend

The videos are all over Instagram and TikTok, which means many Huszti Dental Care patients are asking about them. In these trends, young men – mostly – chew on a flexible silicone ball and their jawlines are instantly transformed into the chiseled look of a male model. Other videos demonstrate “mewing” the practice of pressing your tongue to the roof of your closed mouth. Done regularly, it is said to reduce sagging skin under your chin, thus creating a square jawline.

Spoiler alert: No matter what these videos may show, these practices don’t work and may even be detrimental.

Let’s start with mewing. This has been around since the 1970s and its creators say it helps resolve issues from misaligned teeth to sleep apnea, speech disorders and more. Disorders like these, the creators – Dr. John Mew and his son Mike – say have been caused by the fact that people’s jaws are getting smaller. That part is true.

Chances are it won’t hurt you, but here is very little evidence to support the doctors’ claims. The funny part is that, if not done properly, there is some reason to believe mewing can lead to the very things it was meant to fix.

Give this one a pass.

The more problematic of these two trends is the one often called Jawzrsize, for the product that launched the craze. Chewing on a rubber or silicone ball as a jaw workout designed to square up the jaw and reduce double chins. Doing this can strengthen your bite, but for the vast majority of people, there is no need for that.

Problem No. 1 is that patients can develop temporomandibular disorders, which is pain in the jaw and the muscles that control it. Injuries can occur causing popping and clicking of the jaw and, importantly, pain.

A second possibility dentists worry about with jaw strengtheners, is that the device puts force on the teeth in ways that could cause them to move, causing alignment issues and loosening of teeth.

Another potential problem is that chewing stimulates the production of stomach acid because the body thinks it’s getting some food. Because it is not, the extra acid the body produces can lead to acid reflux, which erodes teeth.

We’ve said this over and over , and we’ll say it again. Don’t take medical advice from teenagers on social media. Huszti Dental Care professionals can explain the pros and cons and help you to make an informed choice.

And always remember, just because it’s on the internet doesn’t mean it’s true.

Your teeth's biggest enemy is food

A recent article in the New York Times about the worst food for your teeth inspired this post. But since not all readers of the Huszti Dental Care blog are subscribers to that newspaper, we thought we would write our own.

We start with this: There are lots of foods that can be bad for your teeth. But the real issue comes in how people eat those foods.

Sugar Bombs : Candy, pastries and sugary drinks can be a one-way ticket to a cavity. Bacteria in your mouth love to feast on sugar, leading to enamel erosion and tooth decay. Consider these treats an occasional indulgence, and always rinse with water afterward. Sugary drinks like shakes and sodas are bad because you sip on them for a long time, which means your mouth hasn't had enough time to fight off the last round of sips before take another. That means the pH in your mouth is off for a longer period of time. That bad pH means cavity-causing bacteria has a longer time to do its evil work.
Acid Attacks : Foods and drinks high in acidity, like citrus fruits, pickles and sodas, can weaken your enamel over time, making your teeth more prone to damage. Limit your intake. Some people think using a straw to minimize the drink's contact with your teeth can help. It may not help, but it won't necessarily hurt.
Sticky Stowaways : Sticky snacks such as caramels, dried fruit and chewy candies can cling to your teeth like nobody's business, providing a breeding ground for cavity-causing bacteria. If you must indulge, brush and floss diligently afterward to remove any lingering residue.
Crunchy Culprits : Potato chips, pretzels and other crunchy snacks might satisfy your cravings, but they can also wreak havoc on your teeth by getting lodged between them, which promotes plaque buildup. Opt for healthier alternatives like raw veggies or nuts instead.

At Huszti Dental Care, we don't recommend you completely cut out sugary foods and drinks. We just suggest you be conscious of how you take them in and rinse your mouth or brush your teeth after eating or drinking.

Bottom line: what you eat matters, not just for your waistline, but for your dental health too. Choose tooth-friendly snacks and beverages, and remember to brush and floss regularly to keep your smile shining bright.

Dental school these days is not only about learning biology, chemistry and chairside manner. It's about becoming part of a national and international network of dental practitioners. And, just as important, it's about being part of the community from which you draw patients.

Olivia and Sophia Huszti, daughters of Huszti Dental Care owners Drs. Bill Huszti and Anna Chong-Huszti, are students at University of Detroit Mercy's School of Dentistry. It's the same school where Bill and Anna met and learned about how important organized dentistry can be in terms of networking, continued education and support of dental practitioners.

Here is only a bit of what Olivia and Sophia have been involved in recently.

National Leadership Conference in Chicago with ASDA (American Student Dental Association) Dental students from around the country are selected from applications to attend NLC to learn more about the dental profession and being a leader in this field. Olivia and Sophia were selected to represent Detroit Mercy's School of Dentistry. It's the holiday season and probably the sweetest time of the year. While that may be good for your tastebuds, it isn't necessarily good for your overall oral health.

Here are a few things you can do to keep a little annual indulgence from becoming a problem.

Watch your sugar intake. Yes, that is a little difficult when relatives and friends and coworkers share pumpkin and pecan pies, cookies, cakes and candies. Or when you have some sweet hot chocolate to wind down at the end of a long day. Look for sugar-free alternatives when possible and remember to brush your teeth after enjoying those sugary delights.

Drink lots of water! It helps wash away food particles that can get caught in the nooks and crannies. That's a good thing! Another benefit of drinking water is that it helps keep your mouth moist. Both of these things help reduce tooth decay.

Chew sugar-free gum. It stimulates production of saliva, which is the body's natural way of cleaning your teeth. (Chewing gum is also a way to stop yourself from having just one more sweet treat.

Eat healthy foods, too. Most people graduate toward the sweets, so that leaves the path to the carrots, broccoli and other crisp veggies available. Fresh vegetables can neutralize acids in the mouth, which is what you want for health teeth and gums.

Use a straw. Beverages travel to all parts of your mouth, coating your teeth with sugar. If you are drinking something that is especially sugary or acidic, using a straw will minimize contact with your teeth.

Don't forget your good habits: Don't let the parties, the preparations and the work that comes with making the holidays special distract you from brushing and flossing at least twice a day.

It's Scary Season! So many people spend October getting ready for one of the biggest kid-centered days of the year: Halloween. They design funn or horror-inducing costumes, bake witchy cookies, decorate their homes to make them look like haunted houses and watch scary movies.

Most people love a good scare every now and then -- some people even think it's a good stress release -- but there is one place you don't need to be scared of. That place is Huszti Dental Care, serving Milford and Highland. Fear of the dentist, or dentophobia, is a real thing. It's very common and often stems from a lack of knowledge about what happens during a dental visit. Huszti Dental Care even has a video tour of their Milford Road office, which should help eliminate any fears.

Huszti Dental Care prides itself on being at the leading edge of dentistry when it comes to treatment and technology to provide better results in less invasive ways for the people of Milford and Highland.

But what you might not know is that the practice is the oldest continually running dental practice in the area. Its history dates back to the 1940s and, with Drs. Huszti and Chong-Huszti's two daughters in dental school, it looks like its future is set for quite a while.

Three decades ago, fresh out of University of Detroit Mercy's School of Dentistry, the newlyweds spent a lot of time touring southeastern Michigan, looking for the right place to set up a practice. They wanted someplace with a community feel, where they could become part of the town's fabric and where they could raise their children. But they went out with open minds — they would know it when they saw it.

"When we found Highland and Milford, we knew it was it," said Dr. Chong-Huszti. "It had a small-town feel that we really loved. Everyone was so friendly, we knew we had found our home."

As they explored the area, they found so much more to love. Avid runners, the two explored the many trails at Kensington Park both walking and training for extended runs. They enjoyed the large, undeveloped areas that meant natural beauty was never far away. And when they built their state-of-the-art building on Milford Road near Highland, they ensured patients could also look out over the protected wetlands while visiting the office. The view has calmed many anxious patients.

They discovered that the practice they purchased dated back to the 1940s and a small brick building on N. Milford Road in Highland. The practice went from father to son before it was sold, moved and expanded over the years. In 2002, the practice moved to its current location.

Over the years, the Husztis have become a proud booster of Highland and Milford, sponsoring events, visiting schools to teach about good oral hygiene, and supporting local businesses and events. If you want to know how much they love Milford, check out this short film !

Racing is a Huszti family affair

The apples don't fall too far away from the Huszti family tree.

We've written before here and here about the importance of fitness to the Husztis. And here is just another example of how they also like competitions.

Dr. Huszti and both daughters, Olivia and Sophie, competed in a triathlon on Island Lake State Park in Brighton.

"It was a ton of fun," said Dr. Huszti. "On the course we could see each other at times and we waved and cheered for each other."

Dr. Chong-Huszti didn't compete, but she was kept on her toes by cheering on her three family members.

"It was a great day and a great way to end the summer," she said. "We all won!"

Dr. Huszti had the best time of the bunch, but it was Olivia who ended up on the podium. In a fun coincidence, she shared shared the podium with Kaitlynn, a former teammate from the University of Detroit Mercy's cross country team.

Now that fall has begun, Olivia has begun her second year at Detroit Mercy's School of Dentistry. Sophie has joined her sister and is in her first year at the school.

Barbenheimer hits Huszti Dental Care

Last week, the cinematic world was in the grips of what is known as Barbenheimer.

It's what happens when two of the most anticipated movies of the year — Barbie and Oppenheimer — open on the same date.

Both movies got great reviews, though they are completely different. Barbie is a feel-good, silly comedy with some deeper meaning while Oppenheimer is a weighty drama about the man who created the atomic bomb. Barbie is bright and pink and happy while Oppenheimer is dark and black and white and serious.

Huszti Dental Care's Dr. Bill Huszti is an award-winning movie director himself, so you know he got his team excited about the biggest movie weekend. The team even got special scrubs for the occasion.

A few of them shared their dental-centric thoughts on Barbenheimer.

"The Barbie movie? Total smile therapy!" said Dental Assistant Kim. "It's like a sweet treat for your eyes without the sweet downside ."

Sugar is the silent enemy

Everyone knows that excessive sugar is not great for your overall health and it's bad for your teeth in particular. But what many people don't know is how present it is in so many things we eat. That means even people who don't add sugar to coffee or eat sweet treats are eating lots of sugar they may not know about.

Let's do the math. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration — which creates those food pyramids to help you eat a healthier diet — suggests that no more than 10 percent of daily calories come from sugar. So, on a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet, also recommended, only 200 of those calories should be sugar. Now, think about a 20-ounce regular pop and understand that there are about 65 grams of sugar. Add a doughnut (about 25 grams of sugar) and you've just about reached half of your sugar intake for the day.

So why is this a problem? Because sugar is hidden in many foods. Say you replace a doughnut with a single-serving flavored yogurt? You just ate as much as 17 grams of hidden sugar. Cold cereal? Even the "healthy" ones like granola can have sugar. Nut butters often have added sugars, so do jarred pasta sauces, salad dressings, granola bars, dried fruit, coffee drinks, toppings like barbecue sauce and ketchup, tonic water, energy bars -- even the gummy vitamins you take to keep yourself healthy have added sugars.

All that sugar contributes to increased bacterial growth in your mouth which, over time, can strip your teeth of their enamel and cause tooth decay.

This is why Huszti Dental Care encourages you to have a regular oral hygiene routine .

Here are ways to avoid extra sugar intake and the troubles it can bring.

Read labels and ask questions: Even if it doesn't say "sugar" on the list of ingredients, it may contain sugar. Look for corn syrup, glucose, corn sweetner, fruit juice, honey, fructose, sucrose — all are sugars and act the same way in your mouth. See how much sugar and added sugar is listed on the label. Chances are you'll be surprised.
If you can, make your own foods from scratch, that way you can determine the amount you want for yourself and your family. That includes sauces, marinades and salad dressings, all of which have lots of hidden sugar. Not only is it healthy for your mouth, it's healthier for your whole body! Remember, just because a recipe calls for a cup of sugar, it doesn't mean you have to add a cup of sugar. Add less, you may be surprised!
Cut down on pop . Even diet pop can cause trouble. Stick with water, coffee and tea with nothing added. You can still treat yourself to a sugary drink, but think of them as something special.

What to do after a sports injury to your teeth

A student-athlete recently came into our Milford dental office with a front tooth injured when she crashed into another player as both jumped to head a ball. She was worried she would lose her tooth, since it had been pushed out of place and was still very sensitive after a few days.

Sports injuries are something we see often at Huszti Dental Care, and we know they can cause a lot of stress. No one wants to lose an adult tooth. But that doesn't always happen, even with what, to you, may seem like a serious injury.

She told us that right after the collision, her tooth felt loose and she pushed it back into place with her tongue. That was smart. Even if a tooth was knocked out, trying to put it back in its socket immediately is often the first step to take. The second step is to see a dentist as soon as possible.

When a patient comes in with an injured tooth, we don't just look at the tooth -- although that gets the most attention. We will also examine the jaw, gums, tongue and cheeks. We will check the motion of the jaw, and may even get an x-ray. All this is done with the idea of saving the tooth, which is the primary goal in all oral injuries.

Here's what you need to know:

An injury isn't always fatal to the tooth. Often, as happened in this case, it is a wait-and-see game. She avoided hard foods and monitored her pain and in a few weeks, she was back to normal.

If a tooth is actually knocked out, there are a few steps to take that may save the tooth. As mentioned earlier, try to fit it back in the socket, but if that's not possible, put it in a container with some milk or salt water and head to the dentist.

Even if a tooth is still in place, it can be dead. If that happens, it will likely change color. Again, that's not the end of the world either: veneers, implants and other procedures done at Huszti Dental Care can keep your smile looking bright.

Sometimes, it may look like you've lost a tooth, but it was actually pushed up into the gums. This happens mostly with baby teeth in children whose jaw bones are still growing and are softer. This situation is often a waiting game, too. But get to a dentist.

Tooth fractures are also common in athletes. Even if there is no pain, as soon as possible get to a dentist who can determine the actual extent of the injury.

Now, the best thing to avoid dental injuries? WEAR A MOUTH GUARD! These are inexpensive, readily available and protect teeth. That's why they are required in so many sports.

Summer is a great time in Milford and Highland

There were many reasons we decided to set up Huszti Dental Care in Milford.

The area was, and remains, a place that is typically American. A small town surrounded by acres and acres of parks and other natural beauty. And the people who live here are generous and caring and friendly.

All the aspects of the area that we loved are on full display in a series of summer events that showcase community and nature. We love these events because we get to see our patients outside of the office, enjoying the summertime, when the living is easy.

Here are a few of our favorite events planned for the next few months.

We love packing up a picnic and heading over to the LaFontaine Family Amp in Central Park in Downtown Milford to listen to the music at the free concert series. They run 7-9 p.m. Thursdays June 1-July 27.
Thursday nights bad for your schedule? There is another concert series on the fourth Friday of May, June, July and August at the Center Street Gazebo in Center Street Park. These concerts are held from 7 to 9 p.m. rain or shine and if the weather is bad, they are moved to teh Milford Presbyterian Church.
If Thursday or Friday don't work, you can catch a free concert at 7 p.m. every Tuesday starting July 11 through Aug. 22 in Veterans Park in Highland Township.
Milford Memories is one of summer's biggest events, with an art fair of some pretty impressive work. It's always held the second weekend in August, so this year it will be Aug. 11-13. Don't miss it!
Both Milford and Highland offer summer sidewalk sales: Milford's comes first July 13-15 and Highland's is scheduled the next weekend on July 21 and 22.
The two municipalities each boast a farmer's market for fresh produce and crafts sold by locals. Highland's is every Saturday from June 17-Oct. 7 in Downtown Highland. Milford's is on Thursday afternoons from 3-8 p.m.
Highland's biggest event is Red, White and Blues, a fireworks festival and craft and vendor show from 5-11 p.m. at John Street Field.
On July 4, come celebrate the country's birthday at Milford's annual parade down Main Street from Commerce to Central Park. This is always a great family event.

If big events aren't your thing, there is plenty to do at Kensington Metropark. There's golfing, a splash pad, farm animals, a nature center, a cruise on Kent Lake, nature walks, swimming, biking, riding, running, picnicking, beautiful sunsets, swimming and splash pads, hayrides, nature classes and, if you can believe it, more!

At work or play, Huszti family is together

Everyone who comes through the door of Huszti Dental Care in Milford says it feels like a family.

That's what strive for with our practice. This is not the dental office you went to as a child, it is a welcoming place of calm and healing. There is a lot of laughter — sometimes tears — but we hope you all know you are family.

We thought you might want to know a little bit about our family.

Many of you may know that Dr. Huszti likes to challenge himself in lots of different ways, from making movies to feats of strength. He has run a number of marathons and triathlons. He shares the love of running with Dr. Chong-Huszti, who has racked up many miles running herself and the two have passed it on to their daughters, Olivia and Sophia.

Last month, the whole family traveled to Washington, D.C. where they all took part in the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run. It was a beautiful day and the four of them joined some 15,000 other runners racing through the nation's capitol. Dad and oldest daughter, Olivia, wore jerseys representing University of Detroit Mercy where he earned his D.D.S. and she is president of the first-year Dental class.

Drs. Huszti and Chong-Huszti met while earning their degree at Detroit Mercy Dental and both daughters are following in their footsteps. Sophia joins Olivia in the fall at the school to earn their D.D.S. degrees. Longtime patients will not be surprised at this, since Olivia and Sophia often could be found helping out around the practice.

They are not sure when or where their next race will be, but there will be one and you can be sure they will all be there to support each other.

Blood is not a good sign when flossing

Our team at Huszti Dental Care really does get it: People don't like flossing.

We have spent decades hearing how patients are going to start a flossing routine immediately only to see them in the chair six months later with red and sometimes bleeding gums because they remembered their promise only a day or two before the visit.

First, we aren't upset when we see that, we just wish patients truly understood the benefits of this simple habit that takes only a few minutes out of your day. And, secondly, we can tell when you haven't been flossing in a while.

Now, usually, when we see red or bleeding gums, it's because a person is being a little aggressive with the flossing. That's often because they are doing it quickly and that's because, we know, you don't like to do it. Slow, gentle flossing is best.

When you start flossing regularly, it's normal to see some blood, so don't let that be an excuse. Any bloodflow should stop pretty quickly and, within a few days of regular flossing, your gums will toughen up, so to speak.

If it doesn't, that might indicate there is a problem. That problem may be flossing incorrectly (see above link on the right way) or gingivitis, which is a precursor to periodontal disease. It develops when bacteria in your mouth becomes plaque that can build up on your teeth. This bacteria at your gumline may change the color of your gums away from a healthy pink to a pale beige, and cause your gums to pull away from the base of your teeth. It has to be removed.

That's what you are addressing when you brush your teeth. But incomplete or haphazard brushing will leave areas of bacteria that grow. Flossing takes care of many of those areas, especially those between the teeth and at the gumline.

Though gingivitis is very common, it can and must be addressed early, before it turns to periodontal disease, which causes gum sensitivity, recession and even tooth loss.

It's all about keeping up oral hygiene

A child’s first tooth is the source of many photos, smiles and, well, sleepless nights.

But did you know that one of the best ways to protect that tooth and the ones that come after begins long before it pokes out from their gum? It begins before the baby is born.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the best way to prevent cavities in young children is to ensure pregnant women take care of their oral health.

When women are pregnant, they may be more susceptible to gum disease and cavities because they may have higher levels of the bacteria in their mouths.

Also, with morning sickness comes stomach acid that can eat away at your tooth enamel, providing an opening for bacteria to use. (If you do have morning sickness, the CDC says rinsing your mouth with water and a little bit of baking soda will neutralize that acid.)

This happens for a number of reasons. Pregnant women eat more and often eat odd combinations of food at times when brushing after isn’t convenient. Also, pregnancy is exhausting! Sometimes it’s easier to go to bed without brushing and flossing. Even after the baby is born, late-night feedings and all the tasks that come with a newborn may lead the mom to slack off on oral hygiene.

A kiss, a shared spoon or a quickly licked clean pacifier (we all do it!) can transfer that bacteria to the baby.

So, what’s a pregnant woman to do?

Well, the first step is obvious: Keep up your oral hygiene routine. Brush twice a day for two minutes each time. Floss regularly.

Huszti Dental Care has the answers

You’ve probably seen one of the latest trends – or should we say fads – in oral healthcare: charcoal toothpaste. Our team at Huszti Dental Care has been answering lots of questions about it from our patients, so we thought it would be a good idea to write about it.

Manufacturers of it promise whiter teeth, fresher breath and all the other benefits of a traditional toothpaste. Some say it removes more surface stains and others say it prevents new stains from forming. What’s not to like?

The American Dental Association (ADA) is not convinced and as of February 2023 has not approved any toothpastes with activated charcoal. That should be all you really need to know. But let’s dive a bit deeper.

First, let’s understand what “activated charcoal” is. First, it is not the same charcoal you grill burgers over. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is a highly absorbent powdered or granular carbon. It has been used traditionally to treat people who have ingested poisons.

So perhaps that’s what gives people the idea that charcoal will absorb your stains and the odors in your mouth.

The ADA, however, has not found that any of the claims are true. In fact, its studies show charcoal toothpaste may even have a detrimental effect on your teeth.

Activated charcoal is abrasive, which makes it good for removing plaque and other substances, but it may be so abrasive that it damages or even removes the outer enamel of your teeth. Other, ADA-approved toothpastes are gentler for your teeth and gums and, therefore, better.

So, as with any fads or new products that make promises above and beyond what you’ve known and used for years, check with a dental professional like those at Huszti Dental Care.

Some facts about marijuana and your oral health

In 2018, Michigan became the first midwestern state to allow both medical and recreational marijuana use for adults.

Michigan residents over 21 can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana at a time from a licensed dispensary for personal use. Residents over 18 and with a valid marijuana card from a medical professional may purchase the drug from a medical marijuana dispensary.

While many in the state cheered this move as long overdue, some people in the healthcare industry urge caution because there are risks to marijuana use, especially to your oral health.

We hear from some patients at Huszti Dental Care that they smoke pot, and it’s good for our team to know that, just like it’s important for us to know of any medication — recreational or prescribed — so we can get a full picture of your health.

Marijuana or its parts like oil or resin can be smoked or mixed into food. It’s the smoking of it — much like the smoking of cigarettes — that can lead to oral health issues. High temperatures inhaled when smoking are irritating to the gums and can lead to sensitivity, swelling, even bleeding. Marijuana also contains carcinogens, so regular smokers of marijuana need to continue proper dental hygiene to prevent gum disease.

Cotton mouth, one of the common side effects of smoking marijuana, means your salivary glands aren’t working properly. Saliva is necessary to reduce bacteria growth and prevent bad breath. Without the proper amount of saliva bacteria stays in the mouth longer, which can lead to cavities.

Don’t forget that hunger is another side effect. When you get the munchies, you reach for what’s at hand, not healthy choices, which could lead to a higher incidence of tooth decay. And smoking anything stains your teeth, even with proper brushing.

Chances are, most people are not smoking marijuana so often that these symptoms will lead to trouble. But if there are other oral health issues, the additional problems that come with smoking marijuana may combine to send you to our Milford office.

Our advice? Keep brushing and flossing regularly. Drink water. Don’t indulge in processed snacks, which are usually full of sugar. And, as with everything, moderation is the key.

We here at Huszti Dental Care would never presume to tell you how you should represent yourself. Blue hair? Great! Tattoos? Fine with us! Piercings? Go for it! Well, kind of…

We see patients with pierced tongues, lips even the frenulum — that piece of tissue joining the upper lip to the gum (more on this later). Most of the time, people don’t consult us before they get these types of piercings, but there are risks when it comes to oral piercings and if you’re considering one, here’s what you need to know.

Oral piercings bring with them many possible side effects. While a person is healing from the procedure, a piercing in the mouth or lip can change the way a person speaks and chews and sometimes those changes remain long after.

The mouth is the center of an intricate system of nerves and if a piercer hits one of them, it can cause numbness — both temporary and long-term — and nerve damage. This might permanently affect your sense of taste.

Tooth damage is also possible when a piercing is done inside the mouth. Imagine how often your tongue hits the back of your teeth. Each time that happens, when you have a bolt or stud in your tongue, there is the risk of chipping or breaking a teeth. Maybe not right away, but it’s a real possibility over time, as a tooth is weakened from regular contact with a piercing. It can also damage gums, which leads to bigger issues.

There is also a risk of infection, especially because the mouth is always full of bacteria and, depending on where the piercing is, it may be difficult to keep clean.

So let’s address the frenulum piercing. It’s also called a smiley piercing, because others can only see whatever is hanging there when you smile. It’s a recipe for trouble, especially if you think about the amount of contact that piercing will have with lip, gum and teeth.

And there is another factor: People with oral piercing tend to play with it as they get used to the feeling. That’s when minor damage happens that becomes a bigger problem later.

There is some good news: When you want to remove it, the hole can close up on its own and pretty quickly. But not always, so keep that in mind.

If you are convinced that an oral piercing is just what you need, there are ways to lessen the potential downsides. The first is to be very picky about who you pay to do the piercing. Do research and ask a lot of questions, including that person’s sanitization procedures. You must also be very diligent about keeping it clean.

Pinhole technique is a little-known option to treat gum recession

Gum recession is not something to be taken lightly. In its earliest stages, there are some treatments — scaling and deep cleaning — that can treat its symptoms and arrest gum loss. It is just one of the many things our staff at Huszti Dental Care look for during your twice-yearly visits. Catching it early can save a lot of trouble later.

It can happen to anyone at any age and can be brought about by something as simple as brushing too hard, by genetics, poor hygiene or other factors like smoking. And gum recession can bring bigger problems, including gingivitis and periodontal disease.

This is an entirely preventable disease — prevented mostly by proper oral hygiene — but it is still very common. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 75 percent of Americans have gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease.

There are many ways to treat gum recession, including gum grafts and one of the more commonly done techniques is to graft tissue onto your gums to regenerate growth at the gumline. Great care needs to be taken with gum grafts to ensure they take, and patients often find it to be a burden.

There is another, much less invasive option and Huszti Dental Care’s Mark Isler is one of a select number of periodontists who are certified to perform this treatment.

The Chao Pinhole Technique was created by Dr. John Chao in 2006 and though it’s relatively new, it has been tested and proven successful over the years. There are no scalpels or stitches and can usually be completed in one visit.

The procedure begins by making a pinhole in the gum through which the periodontist uses specially designed tools to reshape the gum from the inside and move it over the tooth where recession has taken place. Sometimes collagen or another substance is used to plump up the gum for a more natural look.

It is less invasive, long lasting and relatively pain free. It also makes an immediate and marked cosmetic improvement.

Though this technique may sound great, not every person is a good candidate for this surgery. If too much gum has been lost or if you have a history of poor home dental hygiene, are a smoker or have a compromised immune system, you may not be eligible. Huszti Dental Care is all about Milford. Drs. Huszti and Chong-Huszti were so taken with the beauty of the area, they decided not only to open their dental practice there, but that Milford would be the place they would raise a family.

From the small-town feel to the sweeping rural vistas, the Milford is a special place, and the dental office on Milford Road was especially designed to welcome in relaxing views of the protected wetlands where birds and other wildlife live.

There are views of Milford’s beauty everywhere, even when not looking out the windows in the dental office. The interior design was built also as a showroom for the stunning photographs of Milford artist Ted Nelson.

Nelson was a Hall of Fame runner and later a teacher at Milford High School, and one of his passions was photography. He loved spending time outdoors and often brought along his camera to capture the beauty he saw. His muse was Kensington Metropark and the wide variety of plants and animals that make the park so unique and beautiful.

Deer, frogs, ducks, swans and other birds were his frequent subjects, as was the beautiful foliage. Nelson took photos in knee-deep snow, the slush of spring, the heat of summer and the lushly colored fall.

Nelson died in 2015 at 71, but his work lives on in private collections and in a 1999 coffee table book called The Nature of Kensington.

The passion, technique and care evident in the photographs also inspires us every day at Huszti Dental Care.

It's all about prevention

A stitch in time saves nine. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Addressing a small problem now is easier than solving a bigger one later. Better safe than sorry. And on and on. There is a reason there are so many adages about taking action early. They’re true.

The same thing goes when it comes to taking care of your health, especially your oral health. Little things done now will prevent bigger things from being needed later. That’s why we at Huszti Dental Care constantly encourage taking daily care of your teeth in order to keep yourself and your teeth healthy.

You will even see this message on the video screens in the waiting room and other areas throughout our office on Milford Road in Milford, just down the road from Highland. Tips on how to take care of your mouth are interspersed with photos of our staff in and around the community, spreading the news of prevention.

Flossing every day, brushing twice a day, using mouthwash, cutting back on sugary snacks all are important small things you can do to prevent a bigger later. Make them part of your daily routine and you will soon see. Your teeth feel cleaner, you breath is fresher and that gives you the confidence to smile more and show off your pearly whites.

It may sound like a lot — after all, dentists recommend that you brush for two whole minutes! And then flossing? But when you think about it, it’s less than 10 minutes a day that you actively need to be cleaning your mouth. If you do the math, it’s only .0069 percent of your day. You spend more time than that thinking of reasons to not brush and floss!

Another very important preventive tool is to visit your dentist regularly. Sure, it takes more than 10 minutes, but our office is in the heart of Milford and in Highland’s back yard. It’s important because our staff can evaluate whether there are areas you may be missing when you brush and will look for other issues that you may not have thought about. And if you are regularly spending that 10 minutes a day on your oral health, the time in the dental chair will be quick and stress less.

After all, there’s a(nother) saying. Teeth are like people: If you ignore them, they’ll go away. And no amount of prevention will help that.

The importance of regular checkups

Maggie sat into the dental chair slowly. She was looking outside to the protected wetlands that surround the Huszti Building on Milford Road where Huszti Dental Care has been since 2002. Her eyes were wide.

“Wow,” she said. “This is not the kind of dental office I went to when I was a kid.”

It led our hygienist to ask a very important question: “When was the last time you went to see a dentist?”

Maggie paused to think. “I think about 10 years,” she said. “But I live in Highland, so I drive by this building all the time and it got me thinking maybe it’s time to go back.”

Great care in Milford and Highland

Our hygienist chatted with Maggie while she did her examination and found out that Maggie had just gotten out of the habit of regular dental visits because she had bad associations from her childhood.

But today’s dentistry is very different from even 20 years ago. Technology, staff training, patient care and treatments all work together to make a trip to the dentist much less scary than it used to be.

Which makes it that much more important to maintain regular visits to your dentist. You get more than a thorough cleaning, you get an examination and information on how to nip any potential problems in the bud.

“If I knew this is what I’d expect,” Maggie said, “I’d have been back sooner.” So remember, it’s never too late to get into the habit of regular checkups.

Nothing says fall in metro Detroit like the Free Press Marathon.

Dr. Huszti should know, he’s run in several of them. But this year was a little more special as he ran it with his oldest daughter, Olivia.

About a month before the event Olivia came to him and asked if he would run the half marathon with her. As a dental student at Detroit Mercy Dental and president of the first-year class, Olivia has a pretty full schedule, so finding time for training was not easy. But she did what she could. She drew on her time as a cross country runner during undergrad at University of Detroit Mercy. They trained mostly separately, Dr. Huszti giving her tips and advice right up to starting line and encouragement throughout the race.

The day came and it was picture perfect for marathon running. Sunny and warm, but not too warm, one of those fall days that are only made in Michigan.

They ran in tandem and matching singlets bearing the red and blue of Detroit Mercy, where Dr. Huszti graduated in 1992 with a D.D.S. (Olivia will graduate in 2026.) Each bib had a nickname on it: His “Shake” and her’s “Bake.” On the sidelines cheering them on were Anna Chong-Huszti, also a 1992 graduate of Detroit Mercy Dental and Sophia Huszti, Olivia’s younger sister and a current student at Detroit Mercy, studying pre-dental.

It was a little easier for Dr. Huszti to run the course, since his training wasn’t encumbered by classes and clinicals, so when they got to mile 12 of the 13.1-mile course he enjoyed a beer handed to him by former marathon champ and well-known Milford name Mike Anderson.

They finished the route in an hour and 56 minutes, but the memories will last for much longer.

“We had a blast,” Dr. Huszti said.

Patient Spotlight: Artist Heiner Hertling

One of the best parts of being a dentist is getting to know the people who trust Huszti Dental Care with their oral healthcare needs.

Just like each set of teeth is unique, so are our patients and in communities like Milford and Highland, there are many unique and interesting individuals that we have the privilege of learning about as we chat with them at their appointments.

Heiner Hertling is one of those fascinating patients we look forward to seeing. He has been coming to us only a short time, but he has made a big impression. At 80, he is more energetic than many younger people. But what makes him stand out even more is his skill with a paintbrush.

Heiner is an artist whose subjects are extremely varied. He works in oil, pastels and watercolor and his works include everything from streetscapes to broad landscapes to quiet moments in nature. And he also creates enormous bronze or wood sculptures and delicate jewelry. He was commissioned by Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital to create a major sculpture for their children’s wing.

He studied commercial art and advertising in his native Germany then came to the United States and Detroit, specifically, to work as an artist for the advertising needs of the auto industry. After a long and successful career,

He shares his talent in books and videos that teach skills for budding and advanced artists and he has been featured in gallery shows across the country.

We are proud to know Heiner and, in late summer, attended a show at his studio and were truly impressed. Check out his website and we think you will be, too.

As a long-time Milford resident, business owner and father I’m very passionate about our hometown. In 2019 my daughters and I began a filming project to express our appreciation and strong sentiments toward Milford. The film showcases our Milford favorites including local architecture, the downtown and Kensington Park. We invited some wonderful neighbors and institutions to join in as well. Soda and your teeth: It's not a good combination

A new recipe for “healthy soda” is sweeping social media.

It sounds intriguing: Instead of drinking a high-sugar cola with all its calories, simply mix a little balsamic vinegar with sparkling soda water — such as La Croix — and you have yourself a sugar free healthy cola substitute!

But hold on. It may it may be sugar free, it may taste like cola. Heck, it may even be better than cola. But healthy? That’s an entirely different matter.

As dentists, Drs. Huszti and Chong-Huszti know better. They see the effects of drinking too much pop every day in their Milford dental office. It’s not just the sugar, it’s the acids in the soda that are dangerous to the teeth. Also, it’s how people drink it that causes problems.

in a recent statement, American Dental Association spokesperson Edmond Hewlett said, “I love balsamic vinegar, but I enjoy it more on my salad than in my drinking glass. it’s much kinder to the teeth than bathing them in a beverage blend of two acids.”

The more acidic the drink, he went on to say, the greater the risk of tooth erosion with frequent drinking. This is true of citrus fruits and vinegars as well.

All acids can break down tooth enamel, and that loss is irreversible. So mixing a sparkling water — which is made sparkling with carbonic acid — with balsamic vinegar, also an acid, you are giving your teeth a double dose of acid, which is not good.

It’s made even worse when you think about how people drink soda. They take a sip, put it aside. A few minutes later, they take another sip, wait a bit, then drink some more. What you may not know is that it takes the mouth some time to return the mouth to neutralize the acids. So when you consume acidic drinks over a long period of time, your mouth remains acidic and that acid erodes enamel.

So what’s a soda lover to do? Don’t worry, you won’t have to give it up completely but, as in everything, moderation is best.

Drink your soda through a straw so it comes into only minimal contact with your teeth. And try to swallow quickly. You can neutralize the acids by rinsing your mouth with water, drinking mile or eating cheese right after a soda. Brush your teeth, but not too soon as this blog post tells you .

Last, and certainly not least, don’t get your ideas of healthy eating from social media. Ask our staff, we care about you and your health, not about clicks on social media.

Floss like your teeth depend on it. They do!

The joke I’ve seen several times lately shows a person in a dental chair and the hygienist asks: “So, when was the last time you flossed?” Without missing a beat, the patient says: “You should know, you were there!”

Sadly, it’s truer than we at Huszti Dental Care would like to admit. A strong majority of patients admit to only flossing occasionally, and some only when they can feel something stuck between their teeth.

We get it. Some people are uncomfortable putting their hands in their own mouths and they don’t see any results when they’re done. But if they knew the amount of good they are doing, they would make flossing an important part of their oral hygiene program.

Flossing works great in places brushes can’t reach to remove plaque — the film that collects between teeth and near the gumline — that reacts with sugary and starchy food and drinks to harm your tooth enamel, which leads to cavities or tartar buildup. If not treated in a timely fashion, cavities can endanger the health of a tooth and tartar buildup can increase the risk of gum disease. By flossing, you are reducing the chance of developing cavities and helping prevent gum disease.

Another great benefit of flossing is that it removes food that gets trapped in the nooks and crannies of your mouth and decays, which causes bad breath. If you notice your breath is not as fresh as you would like, flossing may be an option.

In addition, you may recall reading other posts on this blog that discuss growing research that seems to link poor oral hygiene with heart disease. So flossing doesn’t just help your mouth, it can help your whole body!

So now it’s time for the basics: Brush your teeth twice every day and floss your teeth once every day. There’s no wrong way to floss, just be gentle. Gums may be tender when you start and you might bleed a bit, don’t worry, that’s normal and should go away quickly. Floss comes waxed or unwaxed and both work equally well, as long as you actually floss. There are broad, flat flosses and sort of puffy floss that expands into gaps and all these work well, too. Still don’t like flossing? Try a water flosser. Interdental brushes and floss/picks can make it easy to get into the habit. And it’s a good habit to get into.

The story of a groundbreaking office

It’s hard to believe that it was 20 years ago that Huszti Dental Care’s new office on Milford Road opened.

It was not the dentist office you may have gone to as a child. It was something completely new. Designed thoughtfully with the patient experience at the forefront of every decision made, it was considered cutting edge and forward-looking when it opened. The office has stood the test of time and remains as patient-centered and modern as the day it opened.

“We put a lot of thought and creativity into this project,” Dr. Huszti said. “Every detail was discussed with the architect and an interior designer to ensure what we wanted to do would be best for everyone who comes into the office. We still hear compliments on it from patients today, even from those who have been coming for years.”

The story behind the design is an interesting one. It started with an article in the Journal of the American Dental Association in 1999 by architect Geri True and Michael Unthank, who was not only a dentist, but also an architect. His idea was that a properly designed dental office has many benefits from creating an enjoyable workspace for dentists and their staff, to providing a relaxing environment for patients, to becoming a marketing tool for the practice. And everything — from the paint color to the lighting to the furniture to the littlest details — contributes to creating the experience.

“We liked what he was saying and felt he was right,” Dr. Huszti continued. “So we found the perfect spot to erect The Huszti Building, and have our new offices as the primary tenant.”

Perhaps the signature feature of the office is the way the dental chairs are positioned overlooking some of Milford’s most pastoral views. The large windows ensure ample natural light, which brightens the mood of everyone from patients to the staff. Full of wildlife, grasses and flowering trees, this sight is protected wetlands and can never be built upon.

The beauty of the Milford landscape is also present on the interior walls, where a collection of the work of photographer Ted Nelson, titled “The Nature of Kensington,” hangs.

On the opposite end of the spectrum are the things patients will not see: the instruments used during exams. In most dental offices, the tray of instruments are in full view of the patient, which causes anxiety in many people. Instruments are easily accessed by the hygienists and dentists on a tray behind, and out of view of, the patient. This helps patients focus not on the instruments, but on the beauty around them.

Our staff takes great pride in our office and we often see them taking patients on little tours, pointing out important details and their favorite views. They treat our office like their home and ensure everyone is comfortable in it.

But there is an added bonus. When COVID-19 shut down so many dental offices and new sanitizing practices were instituted, we were ahead of the game. Our sterilization area and the protocols we had been using for many years were as advanced, if not more advanced, than what was recommended after we were allowed to open.

Milford and Highland events designed to make summer special

More than 25 years ago, when Drs. Bill Huszti and Anna Chong-Huszti were looking for the right spot to open a dental practice, they looked all over metropolitan Detroit. There were many options at that time, some practices were vibrant, others were in unique settings, others were large and growing. But none of them felt right.

Until they came to Milford.

The practice they purchased here was founded in the 1940s and was well-established, the patients loyal and welcoming. But what really sold them was the community of Milford.

“We knew we had found the right place,” Dr. Huszti said. “It just felt right.”

They loved the small town feel, the open fields and the parks and felt it was not just the right place to open a practice, it was the right place to build their family.

“It was important to us that we live in the community where we work,” Chong-Huszti said. “We wanted to become part of the community and we knew Milford and Highland was the kind of place where we could do that.

Over the years Huszti Dental Care has embedded itself in the community, not only with their offices in The Huszti Building on Milford Road, but also by supporting local businesses and sponsoring many events over the years.

Summer officially kicks off on Memorial Day, and that’s when you’ll see Milford and Highland at its best.

It starts off with a traditional parade that brings people from far and wide to Main Street to salute veterans. Three separate music festivals bring people together all summer long as do other events like the annual sidewalk sale, Milford Memories, July 4 parade, home tour, car show, ladies’ night out and more.

The interesting link between gum disease and heart health

When new patients come to Huszti Dental Care, they often are surprised when we ask them about their medical history. One patient recently said he didn’t think a dentist would need to know about his mild heart disease, because it doesn’t affect his teeth.

But dental professions know something that would surprise most people: many diseases can be detected in the mouth before symptoms show up elsewhere.

Conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis, some cancers, even acid reflux have symptoms that a good dental practitioner will see at your regular visits. This is especially true about heart disease, which has links to periodontal disease. If you have periodontal disease, studies show, you are more likely to also have atherosclerosis, or a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque in the arteries is not the same substance as the plaque regular dental visits help remove. Plaque on your teeth is a bacterial film, and plaque in the bloodstream is fat, cholesterol and calcium that attaches to the sides of arteries and restricts bloodflow. But they are related in one important way: If you have periodontal disease, chances are you may also have plaque in your arteries.

Researchers are divided on why this is. It could be as simple as the fact that someone with poor oral hygiene is probably not taking care of his body in other ways, as well. Other studies suggest that if your body is fighting disease in the mouth, it increases inflamation throughout the body, which seems to increase your risk to many other systemic diseases.

But it goes too big a leap to say that periodontal disease actually causes heart disease. Still, studies have shown that treating periodontitis can improve the health of artery walls. And there are probably many other researchers studying the link between gum disease and heart disease.

At Huszti Dental Care, we are always looking for new research that will help us better serve our Milford and Highland patients. And that’s why we ask every time you come to our office whether there have been any health changes since the last time you visited. No health issue is too small.
